Why We Don't Use Palm Oil in Stagecoach Apothecary Soaps

At Stagecoach Apothecary, the ingredients we use in our natural soaps are very important to us. It's not just about what goes into our soaps but how we can do our part in delivering a quality product that's also sustainable. When I started this company, I saw that I had an opportunity to make a difference aligned with my values.

Palm oil is a popular choice in soap making, and it's easy to see why. It's cost effective and creates a very firm bar soap that lasts. With that said, as a small business I decided that it was not the right fit for our soap bars.

Keeping It Local and Intentional

One of the many ways we thought we could make a difference is try to source our oils and butters as close to home as possible. We work with local farmers to get premium lard that would otherwise be waste. We also incorporate Olive oil and Avocado oil, that are a staple in everyday life and butters that are made from seeds creating a sustainable soap.

A Matter of Balance

When making our soap recipes we try to keep them unique for individual needs. Every ingredient we use brings special properties to the table. Lard soap is extremely moisturizing, sustainable and creates a long-lasting bar. Olive oil is great for moisturizing and a staple in my kitchen making it a readily available resource. Coconut oil has amazing cleaning properties and creates a bubble lather needed to clean of oil and grime. Using these ingredients by carefully crafting a recipe gives us a wonder bar of soap without having to use palm oil.

Respecting Choices

As a company we have many amazing products to select from while crafting our soaps. I wanted to try to make soap as traditional as possible while delivering a soap that stands up to modern self-care regimens. As a small business, Palm oil was an easy oil to replace with more sustainable options that keep cost down and deliver a luxury feeling handmade soap. As we grow and change, we will always look to create soaps that keep our values in mind.
